Burglary suspect shot in neck, killed after trying to run over Florida Officer

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — A man who police say was breaking into cars in a Hallandale Beach community is now being charged with murder, after a police officer shot and killed his partner in crime during a confrontation, police said Monday.

Tyler Shuman, 23, who also is facing a charge of burglary to a vehicle, was being held in Broward’s main jail Monday with no bond. According to Florida law, anyone who participates in a violent felony in which someone dies can be charged with murder.

It all happened early Sunday morning in the quiet, residential Golden Isles neighborhood. On Monday, police released body-cam footage of the confrontation.

According to police, there was a report of two men peering in cars with flashlights. When officers arrived, they found the suspects in a gray Toyota Corolla.

According to Shuman’s arrest report, three officers approached the car and told the men to get out.

“The co-defendant/driver ignored the officer’s commands, started revving his engine, reversed his vehicle which resulted in striking a parked, white BMW then rapidly accelerating forward while turning his vehicle toward the direction of one of the officers,” an officer wrote in the report. “The aforementioned officer feared for his life, discharged his firearm multiple times at the suspect’s vehicle while at the same time removing himself from harm’s way.”

The officer also wrote that the driver’s “reckless driving” also resulted in two other vehicles being hit.

The driver, identified as Michael Wilson Jr., 27, was struck in the neck and later died at the hospital, according to the report on Shuman.

On Monday, police identified the officer as Corey Clark, who has been on the force since 2013. Clark is on administrative leave per department policy.

Shuman took off running and was found about two hours later and two blocks away from the shooting scene.
